In the most general sense, globalization refers to the interconnectedness of people and places from around the world based on improvements in transportation, advancements in communication, information technology, and the associated convergence of political, economic, and cultural forces that ensue. Just in terms of transportation alone, the fact that we can get to almost anywhere in the world within a single day, plus or minus a few hours, would be hard to conceive only half a century ago. Moreover, based on available technology, we can now connect directly with one another by telephone or videoconferencing, and we can transfer information within a matter of seconds. Depending on one’s political, cultural, or economic point of view, globalization can be considered a good thing or a bad thing. Nevertheless, in terms of advances in communication and information technologies, it has provided an unprecedented boon for science and education. Indeed, the Internet and electronic publishing alone have had a direct impact on the expansion of research, improvement in communications, and the acceleration of knowledge exchange throughout the world.
