As members of the Board of Registration for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we must respond to Dr. Thornton’s viewpoint of “The Cheshire Profession” in the November 1993 issue of the AJA.
The use of audiology technicians in our state certainly did evoke strong emotions. However, the Board of Registration never made “anonymous accusations” or “threatened impending censorship” of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary program as reported by Dr. Thornton. A member of our board accepted an invitation to visit the facility and observe its program. Upon our request to meet with the board members as a group, representatives from the Infirmary chose to cancel our meeting.
