Well over 1 year ago, Dr. Anthony Cacace contacted me to propose a new article format for AJA. He proposed writing an article (with Dr. Dennis McFarland) concerning the modality specificity of (central) auditory processing disorders [(C)APDs]. Dr. Cacace stated that he believed that clinicians and scientists involved in the treatment or investigation of (C)APDs would benefit from some new ideas and a more open dialogue. He suggested we invite critiques of the article by experts in the field and that the authors of the primary article would respond to these critiques in the form of a rebuttal. It was further suggested that perhaps the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) could host a Web site where the AJA readership could continue this dialogue on (C)APD. This concept was discussed with the publications community at ASHA, and the concept was enthusiastically embraced and implemented. We have remained committed to the peer review process, and the article by Cacace and McFarland (as well as the critiques and the rebuttal) have been peer reviewed.
