The American Journal of Audiology (AJA) publishes summary statistics of acceptance/rejection rates, manuscript processing times, and manuscript topics each year. These summary statistics provide (a) data on acceptance/rejection rates that may be used by tenure/promotion committees, (b) average manuscript processing times for authors who are considering submitting a manuscript, and (c) information on the diverse types of manuscripts in audiology that the journal receives. Occasionally, decisions concerning the quality of a journal also take circulation into account. As of June 2004, the circulation for AJA was 9,167.
Table 1 shows the rates for acceptance and rejection for manuscripts that received a final decision in 2003, regardless of the year the manuscript was submitted originally. Accepted manuscripts are those for which a final decision to accept, with no provisions, has been made. Rejected manuscripts are those that have been judged unsuitable for publication and for which no revision or resubmission has been requested. This table does not include those manuscripts submitted in 2003 for which a final decision is pending.
